En 1969, David Bowie enregistrait la célèbre chanson Space Oddity traduit bizarrerie de l‘espace en référence à 2001: L‘odyssée de l‘espace réalisé l‘année précédente par Stanley Kubrick. Le titre Space Oddity raconte la communication entre l‘astronaute Major Tom et le poste de commande au sol qui accompagne sa mission. Ayant quitté le vaisseau, il se retrouve condamné à errer dans l‘espace.

En 2021, nous présentions A Mountain Oddity, un court-métrage expérimental sur le monument de Buzludzha, un lieu culte du patrimoine bulgare oublié peu de temps après sa construction. Symbole du régime communiste et appelé “La soucoupe”, il divise aujourd‘hui la population bulgare dont une partie souhaite sa disparition pure et simple ou, avec ironie, son envol dans le cosmos. En filmant la rencontre de Valentina Traïanova, chanteuse et artiste performeuse, avec son héritage, nous avons voulu ainsi interroger le sens de ce monument et plus largement la place de la ruine dans nos sociétés et surtout celle des ruines naissantes. Idéologiques, religieuses, industrielles, antiques, médiévales et contemporaines, elles font partie de notre paysage culturel. Pourrait-on imaginer des constellations qui les réunissent afin de nous repérer aujourd‘hui sur nos orientations futures ?

Ces trois œuvres musicales ont été composées par trois musiciens issus de la scène électronique ambient, expérimentale et techno à partir des sons enregistrés pendant le tournage. Derniers vestiges sonores d’un monument que nous avons souhaité voir et écouter avant les premiers travaux de préservation entrepris par une fondation bulgare, elles résonnent aujourd’hui dans les créations de Roman Delore, Metshka et Myles Dillon réunies sous la forme de cet EP numérique, troisième production musicale de l’association Pauza.

Nous les remercions ici pour leur investissement dans ce projet ainsi que l’ingénieur du son Veselin Zografof qui a fait un travail remarquable d’enregistrement de terrain.

In 1969, David Bowie recorded his ever so famous song Space Oddity, a reference to Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, directed the previous year. Space Oddity is a story of communication between astronaut Major Tom and the ground control station following his mission. Having left the ship, he is condemned to wander in space.

In 2021, we presented A Mountain Oddity, an experimental short film about the Buzludzha monument, an icon ic Bulgarian landmark forgotten shortly after its construction. A symbol of the Communist regime – nicknamed "The Saucer"–, today it divides the Bulgarian population, some of whom would like to see it disappear altogether or, ironically, take flight into the cosmos. By filming singer and performance artist Valentina Traïanova's encounter with its heritage, we question the meaning of this monument and, generally speaking, the place of ruins in our societies, especially recent ones. Ideological, religious, industrial, ancient, medieval and contemporary, they are part of our cultural landscape. Could we imagine constellations that bring them together to help us find our bearings for the future?

These three musical works were composed by three musicians from the ambient, experimental and techno electronic scene, using sounds recorded during the filming. The last sound vestiges of a monument that we wanted to see and hear before the first preservation work was undertaken by a Bulgarian foundation, they resonate today in the creations of Roman Delore, Metshka and Myles Dillon brought together in the form of this digital EP, the third musical production by Pauza association.
